We watched this a few weeks into Shelter In Place, and I could not get over the emptiness of the Financial District. At the time, it seemed wildly inaccurate… but the joke appears to be on me.
Roughly the last third of Sonic the Hedgehog takes place around a vacated Market Street, and I’m noting it here for that reason, but it’s a pretty charming story regardless. If you remember the “wacky CG character comes to oUr WoRlD” trend beginning circa 2005, then you definitely know what to expect. This one’s a little different, perhaps a little existential in a way that my age group recognizes: Sonic learns what a bucket list is and spends the movie working his way through his.
The other protagonist is a cop, because we were collectively a lot more naive even a year ago. He is the first to admit that he doesn’t have much to do, and comes across as a decent guy.
If you’re interested in jetting through a sanitized Financial District at the speed of sound, show Sonic the Hedgehog some love!
